"Amity means friendship" ~ Mayor Vaughn
In the summer of 1975 Universal Studios released the movie JAWS and the first Hollywood blockbuster was born. Directed by Steven Spielberg, it became the first film to gross a $100 Million and went on to win 3 Oscars (Best Editing, Best Original Score and Best Sound). Shot on location in Martha's Vineyard, the film was plagued with problems. From rough seas to technical difficulties, the cast and crew were constantly challenged but in the end they produced a film that will go down in history. Of course the movie is best known for it's star, Bruce, the mechanical Great White Shark and the mark he left on hearts and minds of moviegoers.

In 2005 JAWS celebrates it's 30th Anniversary and the story still packs the same punch it did back then. From John Williams theme song (da-dum, da-dum...) to Chief Brody's memorable line "We're gonna need a bigger boat!", the influence of JAWS is alive and well in today's pop culture. Fittingly the Island of Martha's Vineyard Chamber of Commerce decided to pay tribute to this film Icon by hosting a celebration back where it all began:
For three days, June 3 - 5, 2005, the Island of Martha's Vineyard was once again transformed into Amity Island. JAWS fans from around the globe flocked to the small Island off the coast of Massachusetts to visit filming locations, meet cast and crew and just celebrate the movie. Universal Studios was also there with the new 30th Anniversary DVD. Author Peter Benchley, the creator of JAWS, was present as well in addition to many of the local residents who had roles in the film, original props from the movie and a replica of Bruce's head.
It was evident as soon as you arrived that the Island embraced the JAWSfest idea. With 'Welcome to Amity' signs, 'Amity Island Maps' and countless other references to the film, there was no way to escape the celebration. The Martha's Vineyard Times produced a JAWSfest Guide that was essential for all visitors. It listed all the events for the three days and also included other informational items about the Island to help JAWS fans find there way around and make the most of their time. Being a fan of the film and lover of sharks, I was fortunate enough to be on Martha's Vineyard both Friday and Saturday. Although I was not there specifically for JAWSfest I was able to see most of the sights and make it to some of the appearances. The following pages contain information and images of various JAWSfest events that I was able to attend. I've included many links to official sites and fansites that include more information on the weekends events so be sure to follow them.
